Perhaps the consciousness is nothing but a by-product/appearance of happening of play of energy and its intensity depends entirely upon the the quantity of energy taking part in play at a given moment and the contents which
appears to be present because of genes and conditioning.
Hence, the "quality and quantity" of so called consciousness does not remain the same in various states like normal awakened, so called enlightened, sleep, deep sleep, comatose, drugged, dead, so called evolutionary stage, etc.
I think there is nothing in which or where consciousness is not present because everything is nothing but play of energy as scientists are also saying now.
Wherever the play of energy is there consciousness as a byproduct has to be there.
Its a question of only detection/perception of the effect of play of energy.
In animate its effect is easily visible (basically inferred from the movement), but in animate only through scientific instruments this (movement of atomic particles) can be detected.
Perhaps that is why it is said that---Consciousness is all there is.
